# Page title missing: how to fix it

A page title is missing when the HTML has no title element or an empty one. Search and AI engines then have no clear label for the page or for a citation. The cause is often a template or a script that sets the title too late. Add a unique title of 10 to 70 characters. The fix takes about 10 minutes per template.

## What this check tests

SeenLens reads the `<title>` element from the page HTML. In the scan it uses what the page shows after a headless browser render, only when the raw HTML is an empty app shell.

| Result | What SeenLens found |
| --- | --- |
| Fail | No title element, or an empty one |
| Warn | A title shorter than 10 or longer than 70 characters |
| Pass | A title of 10 to 70 characters |

Google gives no fixed length. It says a title should be descriptive and concise, unique to the page, and present in the `<title>` element of every page. Google may write its own title link when your title is half empty, inaccurate or repeated boilerplate.

## How to confirm the problem

```text
curl -s https://example.com/your-page | grep -i -o "<title>[^<]*</title>"
```

No output, or `<title></title>`, is the problem. If the title shows in the browser tab but not in the curl output, a script sets it. Crawlers that do not run JavaScript miss it. See [content that needs JavaScript](https://seenlens.com/fixes/content-needs-javascript).

## How to fix it

Write a title that names the topic of the page first and the brand last. Keep it under 60 characters so it is less likely to be cut off.

```text
<head>
  <title>Fix: Page Title Missing | SeenLens</title>
</head>
```

- **Next.js:** export `metadata` with a `title`, or use `title.template` in the root layout so each page adds its own title. These exports work in Server Components (docs updated 2026-08-19).
- **WordPress:** a theme must call `add_theme_support( 'title-tag' )` so WordPress prints the title. Add it in `functions.php` for a custom theme.
- **Shopify:** open Online Store, Pages, select the page, and choose Edit website SEO under the search engine listing preview. Fill in Page title. For the home page, use Online Store, Preferences. Shopify allows up to 70 characters and says 60 avoids cuts in search results.
- **Single page apps:** set the title on the server, or in the build step, not in a script after the page loads.

```text
// app/layout.tsx
export const metadata = { title: { default: "Acme", template: "%s | Acme" } };
// app/pricing/page.tsx
export const metadata = { title: "Pricing" };
```

## How to verify the fix

1. Run the curl command. The title must appear in the raw HTML.
2. Check that the title is unique. Two pages with the same title confuse engines.
3. Run the SeenLens scan and confirm the check passes.

After you change a title, Google must recrawl the page. Google says this can take a few days to a few weeks.

## When can you ignore it?

Ignore a Warn for a title of 8 or 9 characters if it is the clearest label, such as a brand home page. Never ignore a missing title on a public page.
