# Thin content: how to fix a page with too little text

Thin content is a page with too little useful text for a reader or an AI system to learn from. The cause is often a template that shows images, tabs or a short blurb. Fixing it means adding specific answers, not padding. SeenLens passes a page with 300 or more words of body text, warns from 100 to 299 and fails below 100.

## What does the content depth check test?

The check counts the visible words in the HTML your server sends. It ignores scripts, styles, navigation, header and footer. Then it applies three bands.

| Body words | Result | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 300 or more | Pass | Enough text to describe the topic. |
| 100 to 299 | Warn | The text is thin. Add detail. |
| Under 100 | Fail | Almost nothing to read or cite. |

The 300 word line is a SeenLens rule of thumb. It is not a Google rule. Google says there is no ideal page length and that short and long pages can both work. The line exists to catch pages that have almost no text, such as a gallery, a tabbed template or an app shell.

Google's spam policies do not use a word count for thin content either. They target pages with little added value: scraped content, thin affiliate pages, doorway pages and mass produced pages. The test is purpose and value to users.

## How do I find thin pages?

Run the free scan on the page. The evidence line gives the word count. For a quick check of the raw HTML, compare what the server sends with what a browser shows.

```text
curl -s https://example.com/page | wc -c
```

A small byte count for a page that looks full in the browser points to content loaded by JavaScript. In that case read [content needs JavaScript](https://seenlens.com/fixes/content-needs-javascript) first. AI crawlers read the raw HTML and many do not run scripts.

## How do I add useful depth?

Add text that answers the questions a visitor has at this point. Do not repeat the same sentence in other words.

- Open with a direct answer of one or two sentences. See [answer-first content](https://seenlens.com/fixes/first-paragraph-does-not-answer).
- Add the facts a buyer or reader looks for: price, limits, steps, requirements, dates and names.
- Add a short question and answer section from real support questions.
- Move key text out of images, accordions loaded by script and tabs that start closed.
- Merge pages with a few lines each into one page that covers the topic. Redirect the old URLs to it.
- Mark a page noindex if it must stay short and has no search purpose, such as a thank you page.

### Next.js

Render the text in a Server Component so it is in the first HTML. Avoid fetching the main copy in a client component with `useEffect`, because the server HTML then holds only a loading state.

### WordPress

Write in the post or page editor, not inside a slider or image. Check that your page builder outputs text as HTML. Product category pages need an intro of a few useful paragraphs above the product grid.

### Shopify

Collection and product pages often hold only a grid and a short description. Fill the collection description field and the product description with specific details: size, materials, use, care and delivery.

## How do I verify the fix?

Scan the page again. The evidence line shows the new word count. A pass needs 300 or more body words in the raw HTML. Then read the page as a visitor. Every paragraph must give a fact, a step or a decision aid.

## When can I ignore this check?

Some pages are short by design: a login page, a contact form, a cart or a tool page whose value is the tool. Do not pad them. If the page is a tool, add a short description and a how to section only where a visitor needs it. The check has weight 4 in the content dimension. A short page with a correct answer is better than a long page with filler.

## What is thin content?

### What is thin content?

Thin content is a page that gives users little or no added value. Google lists scraped content, thin affiliate pages, doorway pages and mass produced pages as examples. Low word count alone is not the definition.

### How many words does a page need?

Google says there is no ideal length. SeenLens uses 300 words of body text as the pass line for its own check, as a signal that a page has something to read.

### Do AI answers prefer long pages?

No study isolates page length. Google says short and long pages can both work. Write the length the topic needs.
