# What is query fan-out?

Query fan-out is a technique in which an AI search feature turns one question into several related searches and combines the results into one answer. Google's documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use it. It is a method that Google documents, not a setting a site owner controls.

## Definition

Google describes query fan-out as issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. Its guide defines the fan-out queries as a set of concurrent, related queries that the model generates. The goal is to surface a wider set of links than the original question would return.

## How does query fan-out work?

The engine reads the question, writes sub-queries, retrieves results for each one and writes one answer from the combined results. Google does not publish the sub-queries for a given answer. The table shows an illustration, not real output:

| Step | Example |
| --- | --- |
| Question | Can ChatGPT crawl my website? |
| Sub-query 1 | OAI-SearchBot robots.txt |
| Sub-query 2 | GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot |
| Sub-query 3 | Cloudflare blocks AI crawlers |
| Answer | One text that draws on pages found for the three sub-queries |

A page can appear in the answer because it ranks for one sub-query, even when it does not rank for the original question.

## Who uses query fan-out and what is the evidence?

- **Google.** The AI features page says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, and that the two features can use different models, so they cite different pages. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no extra technical requirements.
- **ChatGPT.** OpenAI's crawler page does not describe fan-out. An Ahrefs study of about 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts (April 2026) found that cited page titles matched the fan-out sub-queries better than the original prompt (similarity 0.656 against 0.602). This is a vendor study and shows correlation.
- **AI Overview citations.** An Ahrefs study of 863,000 keyword results (March 2026) found that 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10. Ahrefs links part of the drop from 76% in July 2025 to fan-out. It credits the rest to better parsing.

## How do I check fan-out coverage?

Google's documentation lists no report that shows the fan-out queries behind an answer. Three partial methods exist. First, list the sub-questions a buyer asks, and check that a page answers each one. Second, read the Search Console generative AI report to see which pages get impressions in AI features. Third, read the Bing report for [grounding queries](https://seenlens.com/glossary/grounding-queries), which show the phrases an AI used to retrieve your content. The SeenLens scan does not test fan-out coverage. It tests whether a page can be fetched and read. See the [GEO audit](https://seenlens.com/tools/geo-audit).

## Frequently asked questions

### What does query fan-out mean?

It means one question fans out into many related searches. The engine merges the results into one answer.

### Does Google AI Mode use query fan-out?

Yes. Google's AI features documentation says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use it.

### How do I optimize for query fan-out?

Google gives no special steps. Write pages that answer the narrow sub-questions of your topic clearly, and keep them indexable. Google also says original content with first-hand expertise matters most.

### Can I see the fan-out queries for my page?

Not from Google. Bing shows grounding queries for Copilot and Bing summaries. They are a sample and may differ from Google's.

### Does a page need to rank first to be cited?

No. The Ahrefs study found that many cited URLs rank outside the top 10. Rankings still supply the largest share.
