Answer-first content: how to fix an opening that does not answer

Answer-first content states the main point in the first sentence under the H1. The check fails when a cookie notice, skip link or vague intro comes first. It warns when no sentence ends in the first 220 characters. The fix takes about ten minutes per page: write one clear sentence and move notices out of the main content.

What does the opening check test?

SeenLens extracts the main text of the page. It removes a leading skip link such as 'Skip to content'. It also removes a leading repeat of the page title or H1 when that text is not a full sentence. Then it reads the first 300 characters.

The check cannot judge whether the sentence is a good answer. It tests the position and the length of the first sentence. Read the sentence yourself and ask whether a stranger gets the point from it alone.

The evidence for this practice is correlational. Studies of AI citations report that cited passages tend to sit early on a page, but none proves that moving an answer up causes a citation. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization beyond good content. Write answer-first because readers also want it.

How do I see what the opening looks like?

Run the scan and read the evidence line. It quotes the sentence it found or the text that caused the failure. You can also view the raw HTML and read the first text after the H1.

Terminal
curl -s https://example.com/page | python3 -c "import sys,re;h=sys.stdin.read();h=re.sub(r'(?s)<(script|style)[^>]*>.*?</\1>','',h);t=re.sub(r'<[^>]+>',' ',h);print(' '.join(t.split())[:600])"

The command drops scripts and styles, strips the tags and prints the first 600 characters of text. The page text starts after the menu. If a banner or notice shows up before your first sentence, the opening fails.

How do I write an answer-first opening?

  1. Write the question the page answers in one line.
  2. Answer it in one sentence of 20 to 160 characters. Name the subject in the sentence.
  3. Add the one fact that matters most: a number, a condition or a time.
  4. Put background after that.
Example
Before: Welcome to our guide. In this article we will look at many things about the topic.
After: A canonical tag tells search engines which URL to index. Add one link tag with the page's own address to the head.

Cookie banners and notices

Load a cookie banner after the main content in the DOM, or render it as a fixed overlay outside the main element. Put main around the page content so extraction tools can find it. Do not place promo bars or notices as the first text inside main.

HTML
<body>
  <header>...</header>
  <main>
    <h1>Pricing</h1>
    <p>The scan is free. The full report costs USD 49 once per URL.</p>
  </main>
  <div role="dialog" aria-label="Cookie settings">...</div>
</body>

Next.js, WordPress and Shopify

In Next.js, put the lead paragraph directly under the H1 in the page component and render the banner component outside main. In WordPress, start the post with a short paragraph block and move any notice block lower or into the theme footer. In Shopify, edit the first paragraph of the page or product description, and check that the announcement bar is outside the main content section of the theme.

How do I verify the fix?

Scan the page again. The evidence line must quote your new first sentence. Then read the first two sentences aloud. If they answer the page question, the page is done.

When can I ignore this check?

Some pages open with a form, a tool or a product grid. A tool page can open with the tool and put the answer in the first text block below it. If a legal notice must show first, keep it short. This check has weight 4 in the content dimension, so a warning on a tool page has a small cost.

How do I write content for AI Overviews?

How do I write content for AI Overviews?

Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Write original content that answers the question clearly. An answer-first lead helps readers and helps snippet extraction.

Does the first sentence need the keyword?

It needs to name the subject in plain words. Do not repeat the keyword to fill space.
