GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what is the difference?
SEO aims for rankings in search results, AEO for direct answers, and GEO for citations inside AI answers. The three overlap heavily. AI answers take most of their sources from search results, so classic SEO still does most of the work. GEO adds attention to brand mentions on other sites, clear self-contained passages, and access for AI crawlers.

What are SEO, AEO and GEO?
- SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making pages rank in search results such as Google and Bing, so people click through to your site.
- AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of making your content the answer a system shows directly: a featured snippet, a voice answer, or an AI answer. The term has no single documented origin; it is an industry term, and many people now use it for AI answers too.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of making your content and brand appear in answers that AI systems generate, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. The term comes from a research paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors, often called the Princeton GEO paper (arXiv 2311.09735, first posted November 2023, published at KDD 2024).
In practice AEO and GEO mean almost the same thing today. People who say AEO often started from featured snippets. People who say GEO often started from ChatGPT. Both now point at AI answers.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO compared
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer to a question | Be cited or mentioned in AI-generated answers |
| Where results show | Google and Bing result pages | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, AI answers | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| What success looks like | Rankings, clicks, organic visits | Your text or brand shown as the answer | Your page cited as a source, or your brand named in the answer |
| How it is measured | Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, analytics | Snippet tracking; Search Console shows AI feature impressions since June 2026 | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance (citations, grounding queries), prompt tracking tools, AI referrals in analytics |
| Main levers | Indexable pages, relevance, links, page experience | Clear question headings, short direct answers | SEO basics plus brand mentions, inclusion in third-party lists, answer-first passages, AI crawler access |
| Origin of the term | Common since the late 1990s | Industry term, no single source | Aggarwal et al., arXiv 2311.09735 (2023) |
Measurement is the weakest part of GEO. AI answers change from run to run. An Ahrefs study tracked about 37,500 citations for 20 days and found that 50% to 60% of citations disappeared by the next answer. One check of one prompt tells you little.
Where do GEO and SEO overlap?
Most of the way. AI answers retrieve pages through search, so a page that is not indexed or ranked rarely gets cited.
- Google says it plainly. Its documentation states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
- ChatGPT draws on search. In an Ahrefs study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts (published April 2026), about 88% of the URLs that ChatGPT cited came directly from its search results.
- AI Overviews cite ranking pages, and more. Ahrefs studied 863,000 keyword results (published March 2026) and found that 37.9% of AI Overview citations rank in Google's top 10. Another 31.2% rank from 11 to 100. Google's query fan-out explains part of the rest: the system runs related sub-searches, and pages that rank for those sub-queries get cited.
The practical result: good SEO is the entry ticket for GEO. Narrow pages that rank for specific sub-questions have more ways into AI answers than one broad page.
What is different about GEO?
GEO differs from SEO in four places. Each one has its own evidence, and the strength of that evidence varies.
Brand mentions on other sites
In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands (December 2025), branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66 to 0.71, and YouTube mentions at about 0.74. Domain Rating correlated at only 0.27 to 0.33, and backlinks very weakly. The sample covers brands with a Domain Rating above 40, and correlation does not prove cause. Google also warns that inauthentic mentions get filtered.
Third-party lists
For best-of prompts, lists matter. Ahrefs looked at 750 prompts (December 2025) and found that 43.8% of the page types ChatGPT cited were best-of lists, and 35% of cited lists sat on low-authority sites. Getting into other people's lists is a GEO lever with no close SEO match.
Passage structure
AI answers quote passages. A section that states its answer in the first sentence, and names its subject instead of saying "it", can stand alone when quoted. The studies on answer position are correlational and mostly seen in secondary reports, so treat this as low-cost good practice. Google says there is no need to split content into small chunks.
Separate crawlers
Each AI engine has its own crawler: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity. A robots.txt rule or firewall setting can block one of them while Googlebot still gets through. The robots.txt guide for AI crawlers shows how to allow them.
Where is the evidence weak?
- The Princeton GEO results come from a lab benchmark. The paper reports visibility gains of up to 40% on GEO-bench from methods such as adding statistics, quotations and cited sources. We found no independent replication on live engines.
- Schema markup shows no proven citation lift. The Ahrefs 2026 study of 1,885 pages found no clear gain. Google says structured data is not required for AI features.
- llms.txt shows no use by answer engines. Google Search does not use it, and 97% of files in an Ahrefs log study got no requests. See does llms.txt work.
- Most studies are by vendors and are correlational. Ahrefs, Semrush and others sell tools in this field. Large samples help, but they do not show cause.
- Vendor ranking-factor weights have no method. Ignore claims such as "freshness is 40% of the score".
A practical plan for SEO, AEO and GEO
- Make pages fetchable. Allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in the firewall. Serve the main text in the HTML.
- Get indexed in Google and Bing. Verify the site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap, and use IndexNow for Bing.
- Write pages for specific questions. Use the question as a heading and answer it in the first sentence. Add tables where readers compare options.
- Publish something original. Google names original, first-hand content as the strongest factor for its AI features. Original data also earns mentions.
- Earn mentions where AI looks. Ask to be included in honest third-party lists. Take part in forums and on YouTube with real answers.
- Measure over weeks. Watch Search Console AI impressions, the Bing AI Performance report and a fixed set of prompts, run the same way each week. See how to check AI visibility.
Steps 1 and 2 are technical and quick to test. A SeenLens scan checks AI crawler access, content structure, structured data, agent readiness and technical delivery on one page. The score measures readiness. It does not measure how often AI answers mention you.
FAQ
What is GEO in digital marketing?
GEO, generative engine optimization, is the work of getting your content cited and your brand named in AI-generated answers such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal et al.
What does AEO stand for and what does it do?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It aims to make your content the direct answer a system shows, such as a featured snippet, a voice answer or an AI answer.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI answers draw most of their sources from search results: about 88% of ChatGPT's cited URLs in one Ahrefs study came from search. GEO builds on SEO.
What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is a loose label. Some people use it for GEO and AEO, others for using AI tools to do SEO work. Ask which one is meant.
Can a beginner do SEO and GEO?
Yes. The first steps are technical and testable: let crawlers in, get indexed, and answer specific questions clearly. Brand mentions and lists take longer.
