AI Overview not showing up: why it happens and what to check
AI Overviews do not appear for every search. Google shows one only when its systems decide it helps, and only in supported countries and languages. If your site is missing from the AI Overviews that do appear, Google says no special markup is needed. The page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

Why do I not see an AI Overview in my Google results?
Most people who search this phrase see no AI Overview on their own screen. Google's help page gives these reasons.
- The search did not trigger one. Google shows an AI Overview when its systems decide generative AI can be especially helpful. Its developer guide adds that AI Overviews show only when they are additive to classic Search, so many searches get none.
- Your country or language is not supported. Google lists the countries, territories and languages where AI Overviews are available. Check the list for yours.
- You selected the Web filter. The Web filter shows text-based links without features such as AI Overviews.
- AI Mode has its own list. AI Mode is available in listed countries, territories and languages, and some options need a minimum age. Google lists no account requirement for AI Overviews.
Google also says that the feature cannot be turned off. Google's page warns that its settings text is being updated, so the steps on your device may differ.
What does Google require for my site to appear in AI Overviews?
Google states that no extra requirements or special optimizations exist for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google adds that indexing and serving are never guaranteed, even when a page meets every requirement.
Google's May 2026 guide on generative AI features adds more points. Google Search does not use llms.txt. Structured data is not required for these features. There is no ideal page length, and you do not need to split content into small pieces. The guide says original, first-hand content is the most important factor over the long run. The guide also warns against tools that claim access to Google's internal metrics.
Why is my site not showing in AI Overviews? A diagnosis checklist
Work down the table from the top. The first rows are blockers that you can test in minutes. The last rows are about content and need judgment.
| Check | How to test | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The page is not indexed | URL Inspection in Search Console: is the URL on Google? | Fix the cause. A noindex tag is the common one. See noindex blocks AI answers. |
| Googlebot cannot crawl the page | URL Inspection: crawl allowed and page fetch | Fix the robots.txt rule or the firewall rule. See robots.txt for AI crawlers. |
| A snippet control limits the text | Search the HTML and the headers for nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet | Google says nosnippet also stops direct use as input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and max-snippet limits it. Remove or raise the control if you want the page eligible. |
| Someone switched off the Search Console control | Open Search Console and look for the generative AI features setting | Google says opted-out sites receive no traffic or impressions from these features. It says the control is not a ranking signal. |
| Content only appears after JavaScript runs | View the rendered HTML in URL Inspection and the raw HTML with curl | Google renders JavaScript, but other AI crawlers may not. See content needs JavaScript. |
| The page answers only the head term | List the sub-questions a searcher would also ask | Cover the sub-questions on the page. See the next section. |
| The content repeats what others say | Compare your page with the top results for the query | Add first-hand detail, data or experience that other pages lack. |
Blocking Google-Extended is not a cause. Google states that Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal. It limits training and grounding for Gemini apps and some other systems.
What is query fan-out, and why can a top-10 page still miss?
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources. This technique is called query fan-out. The AI feature then builds one answer from results of those searches, not only from the results for the words that the user typed.
Ahrefs measured the effect in a study published on 2026-03-02. It analysed 863,000 keyword results pages and about 4 million URLs cited in AI Overviews. Of the cited URLs, 37.9% ranked in the top 10 for the query, 31.2% ranked 11 to 100, and 31.0% ranked below 100. In an earlier study from July 2025, about 76% of cited pages came from the original results. Ahrefs links part of the drop to fan-out and says better parsing changed its counts too.
| Position of the cited URL | Share of citations |
|---|---|
| Top 10 | 37.9% |
| 11 to 100 | 31.2% |
| Below 100 | 31.0% |
Two lessons follow. A top-10 rank for the head term does not make a page eligible to be cited. A page that ranks for one of the sub-questions can be cited even when it does not rank for the head term. Google says you do not need a page for every variation. Write one clear page that answers the sub-questions well. The glossary entry query fan-out explains more.
How can I see whether AI Overviews show my pages?
- Search Console, generative AI performance report. Google added it on 2026-06-03. It shows impressions only, by page, country, device and date. Google's announcement does not say whether AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported separately. Clicks stay in the normal Performance report under the Web search type.
- Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance. Microsoft launched it in public preview on 2026-02-10 for Copilot and AI summaries in Bing. It shows citations and the grounding queries behind them. It does not show clicks.
- Manual checks. Search your target questions on a fixed day each week and write down what you see. Results change between runs.
The guide how to check AI visibility compares these methods. Fix any blocker row in the diagnosis table before you measure.
What does the SeenLens scan check for AI Overviews?
The scan tests the blockers that you control: noindex, robots.txt, firewall responses, canonical URL, JavaScript-only content, title, description, headings and the first paragraph. It cannot see Google's decision to show or skip a page. Its score measures readiness, not appearances in AI Overviews. Read how the checks work.
