What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often AI answer engines mention, cite or link your brand or pages in their answers. No standard defines the term, and Google, Microsoft and tool vendors measure different things under it. SeenLens measures one input only: whether AI crawlers and agents can fetch and read a page.

Definition
AI visibility covers answers from engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. A brand is visible when an answer names it, quotes a page of it, or links to it. Google uses the phrases visibility in generative AI features and visibility in AI search experiences in its own guide, and it does not define a metric called AI visibility.
What are the two layers of AI visibility?
| Layer | Question | How you measure it |
|---|---|---|
| Readiness | Can AI crawlers and agents fetch, read and use the page? | A scan such as the GEO audit, the AI crawler checker, server logs |
| Outcome | Do answers mention, cite or link the page? | Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, referral analytics, a fixed set of prompts |
Readiness is a precondition for the outcome. It does not guarantee it. A SeenLens score measures readiness only. It does not query any AI engine.
How is AI visibility reported today?
- Google Search Console. The Search Generative AI performance report shows impressions for AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. It breaks them down by page, country, device and date. It reports impressions only. Google rolled it out to all sites by 31 August 2026.
- Bing Webmaster Tools. The AI Performance report, in public preview since 10 February 2026, shows total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries and page-level citation activity for Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partners. It does not show clicks.
- Referral analytics. Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai or claude.ai show clicks from answers. They miss answers that nobody clicked.
- Prompt panels. You run a fixed list of prompts each week and record which brands appear.
Answers change often. An Ahrefs study of about 43,000 keywords found that the wording of AI Overviews changed 70% of the time between checks, and the cited sources changed 45.5% of the time. A second Ahrefs study tracked about 37,500 citations and found that 50 to 60% were gone by the next answer. Track mentions over time instead of one citation.
How do I check my AI visibility?
Start with readiness. Run the free GEO audit on your key pages. Then read how to check AI visibility, which covers Search Console, Bing and prompt panels. The Bing AI Performance guide shows how to use the only report that lists the queries behind citations.
Frequently asked questions
What does AI visibility mean?
It means how often AI answer engines mention, cite or link your brand or pages. Different tools count different things, so compare numbers only within one tool.
What is AI search visibility?
It is the same idea applied to AI search products such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews.
Is AI visibility the same as SEO?
They overlap. Google says its AI features use core ranking and quality systems, so SEO practice still applies. AI visibility adds AI crawlers, AI agents and citation reports.
Can I get an AI visibility score for free?
You can get a readiness score for free from the SeenLens scan. Measured mentions come from free reports in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Why does my visibility change from day to day?
Engines rewrite answers and swap sources often. Ahrefs found that 45.5% of cited sources changed between checks of the same keyword.
